Getting Around in the Arizona Court Rules Site

Several commonly used sets of rules are listed on the Arizona Court Rules welcome page. Just click a rule to view its table of contents.

You can find other court rules by browsing the complete table of contents or by searching for rules related to your issue.

Click Home to return to the Arizona Court Rules welcome page at any time. To go to the Arizona Judicial Department site, click AJD Home.

Using the Table of Contents

Click Table of Contents to view the complete table of contents for the Arizona court rules. The table of contents provides a convenient way to view a specific rule in the context of the rules surrounding it. Hypertext links allow you to move between levels of the table of contents and retrieve the text of specific rules.

Links to Arizona Statutes
As you browse the table of contents, you may see links to Arizona statutes (AZ Statutes). You can view the complete table of contents for Arizona statutes. The text of Arizona statutes documents, however, is not included with this site. If you click a document link, you will get a message similar to this: The TOC command which you entered is not valid. Type toc pubs and press ENTER for available commands. You can click your browser's Back button to return to the Arizona statutes table of contents or click Table of Contents to return to the Arizona Court Rules table of contents.

You can retrieve the full text of Arizona statutes documents using Westlaw by credit card or westlaw.com.

Searching Arizona Court Rules

You can search for rules using the Natural Language search method. Natural Language allows you to retrieve relevant documents by typing a description in plain English.

  1. Click Search.

  2. Type a description of your rule in the Natural Language Description text box. For example, to retrieve rules pertaining to requirements for service of process, type the following description:

    what are the requirements for service of process

  3. By default, your Natural Language search will retrieve the 20 documents most closely matching the concepts in your description. You can change the number of documents retrieved by your search in the Maximum Results text box. You can retrieve a maximum of 100 documents.

  4. Click Search next to the Natural Language Description text box to run your search.
Note: Your search will be run in the complete set of Arizona state court rules.

Browsing Documents

Citations List
When you are viewing a search result, the citations list is shown in the left frame and the full-text documents are in the right frame. You can click the number preceding a citation in the left frame to view that document's full text in the right frame.

To see the next 20 documents that match the concepts in your description, click the right arrow at the top or bottom of the citations list.

Browsing by Search Terms
In a search result, you can click the right or left Term arrow to move to the next or previous occurrence of your search terms in the displayed document.

Browsing by Document
In a search result, you can click the right or left Document arrow to move to the next or previous document in your search result.

Documents in Sequence
You can use Documents in Sequence to view consecutive documents even if they were not retrieved by your search.

For example, if you retrieve 16 A.R.S. Rules of Civil Procedure, Rule 23(d), click Docs in Sequence to view Rule 23(e). Click the Prev and Next arrows in the left frame to view other consecutive rules. To cancel Documents in Sequence and return to the document you were viewing, click Cancel Docs.

Currentness Information
A current through line located at the end of each rule tells you how current the document is. Currentness information is also shown on the welcome page.

Some documents will also include a reference to Scope, which is a Westlaw feature that provides information about coverage. Scope is not available on this site; the current through line provides the coverage information.

Updates to a Rule
An Update button is displayed when court orders that amend or repeal your rule are available. Click Update to view the court order. (You are not charged for viewing these court orders.)

From a court order, click your browser's Back button to return to the document you were viewing.

Cited Documents
Links are available for some cited documents that are outside the scope of the Arizona Court Rules service. You can retrieve these cited documents for a fee via Westlaw by credit card or Westlaw. When you click the link for a cited document, a message informs you that you will be charged for retrieving the document. Click OK to retrieve the document, or click your browser's Back button to return to the Arizona Court Rules service.

Links in a Rule's Title and Heading
You can click a rule's title or section heading to return to that level of the table of contents.

Charges for Accessing Cited Documents

You are not charged for viewing any of the unannotated Arizona state court rules included at this site or for any court orders retrieved using the Update feature.

You will be charged for retrieving cited documents not included with this service, such as Arizona statutes. Before a cited document is retrieved, a message will warn you that you will be charged for the document. You can accept the charge and retrieve the document, or click your browser's Back button to cancel the request.

If you choose to retrieve a document outside of the Arizona Court Rules site, a page will be displayed that prompts you to specify the service you want to use. If you have a Westlaw subscription, select westlaw.com™. If you do not have a Westlaw subscription, select Westlaw by credit card to pay for the document by credit card.

Retrieving Documents with Westlaw by Credit Card

If you do not have a Westlaw subscription, you can retrieve cited documents and pay for them via credit card using Westlaw by credit card. Westlaw by credit card is a document retrieval service of West. it Card

Enabling Cookies

Your browser must have cookies enabled to access the Arizona Court Rules site. Complete the steps corresponding to your browser to enable cookies:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x
  1. Choose Internet Options from the View menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Security section of the list, select the Always accept cookies radio button under Cookies.
  4. Click OK.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x
  1. Choose Internet Options from the View menu.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Click the Internet icon.
  4. Click Custom Level. The Security Settings dialog box is displayed.
  5. Scroll down to the Cookies section of the list, then select Enable under Allow cookies that are stored on your computer.
  6. Click OK in the Security Settings dialog box.
  7. Click Yes in the message box to confirm that you want cookies enabled.
  8. Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
  1. Choose Internet Options from the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Privacy tab.
  3. Slide the vertical scroll bar to Medium or lower.
  4. Click OK in the Internet Options dialog box.

Netscape Navigator 4.7x
  1. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
  2. Double-click Advanced.
  3. In the Cookies box, select Accept all cookies.
  4. Click OK.

Netscape Navigator 6.0
  1. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu.
  2. Double-click Privacy & Security.
  3. Click on Cookies.
  4. Select Enable all cookies.
  5. Click OK.
